The Kansas City Streetcar Authority recently announced the arrival of its newest streetcar, the first of eight new vehicles to support a 3.5-mile southward expansion of the line. The extended line will connect Union Station to the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus, with operations expected to commence in early 2025.
Progress on Streetcar Line Extension
Up until November, two-thirds of the tracks required for this extension had been laid. CAF USA Inc., the company manufacturing the streetcars, will deliver the remaining vehicles to Kansas City at approximately four-week intervals. The recently arrived streetcar, numbered #807, was unveiled on Friday afternoon after its journey from Elmira, New York. The public had the opportunity to see the new vehicle for the first time on social media.
Each of these streetcars is capable of traveling in both directions on the track, measures 77 feet in length, weighs 78,000 pounds, and can accommodate up to 150 passengers at once.
Additional Expansion Plans for the Streetcar Line
In addition to the southern extension, plans are in place to expand the Kansas City streetcar line by 0.7 miles from the River Market area to Berkley Riverfront. This project is set to begin this year, with the goal of opening the new section by late 2025 or early 2026. The cost of the southern extension is estimated at $351 million, while the additional segment to Berkley Riverfront is expected to cost $61.1 million.
